Adding Fractions With Different Denominators

Description

To review adding and subtracting fractions with common denominators the starter provides two simple triangle problems for the students to complete.  A fraction wall is provided on the second slide to provide an illustrative understanding of how to add and subtract fractions with different denominators.  Once the need to calculate common denominators is established the fractions are evaluated numerically.  The third slide provides an opportunity for students to practice this.  In the plenary students show progress through attempting a similar problem to the starter however this time the fractions have different denominators.

Differentiated Learning Objectives:

By the end of the lesson:

  • All students should be able to add and subtract fractions where one denominator is a factor or multiple of another using a fraction wall.
  • Most students should be able to add and subtract fractions where one denominator is a factor or multiple of another using equivalences.
  • Some students should be able to add and subtract fractions where neither number is a factor or multiple of the other.
