Equations With Algebraic Fractions
To solve equations involving the total and difference of algebraic fractions students need to have a secure understanding of how to perform addition and subtraction by finding a common denominator. This skill is reviewed in the starter. The main activity involves manipulating the algebra within linear and later on, quadratic equations derived from adding or subtracting the algebraic fractions. Students need to know how to solve linear and quadratic equations using the balance method and factorizing quadratics. The plenary is intended to challenge the students since the use of the Quadratic Formula or Completing the Square maybe needed.
Differentiated Learning Objectives:
By the end of the lesson:
- All students should be able calculate the difference and total of algebraic fractions.
- Most students should be able to solve an equation involving a linear algebraic fraction.
- Some students should be able to solve an equation involving a quadratic algebraic fraction.
