Deriving The Nth Term From A Linear Sequence
Students learn how to create formula, called the nth term, to algebraically describe a numerical and picture arithmetic sequences. As learning progresses students are challenged to derive the nth term for a fractional sequence by considering its numerator and denominator and separately.
The start of the lesson reviews describing number patterns on a term to term basis by calculating missing terms within the sequence.
The plenary is used to assess each of the three differentiated learning objectives by matching up a sequence with its corresponding nth term formula.
Differentiated Learning Objectives
- All students should be able to derive the nth term of a positive sequence.
- Most students should be able to derive the nth term of a positive and negative sequence
- Some students should be able to derive the nth term of a fractional sequence.
